Alaska

Great expanses of wilderness, the ghostly Aurora Borealis, wildlife at its most raw -- in other words, Alaska! One of the last few natural places on Earth, Alaska is relatively unspoiled by modern industry. Majestic mountains, clear streams and lakes and abundant wildlife are common throughout this beautiful state. These are the reasons why so many people travel to Alaska for vacation.

Alaska vacations bring you to the largest state in the U.S. Alaska lies on the Arctic Circle, which is one reason why so much of it is uninhabited. Alaska is made up of five regions -- Arctic Alaska, Central Alaska and Southeastern, South-central and Southwestern Alaska.

Visiting Alaska

The most popular ways to get into the state are by way of an Alaska cruise or an airplane. Ship and plane are also the primary sources for travel around the state. Most incoming flights will arrive in Anchorage's Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. In fact, the airport recently underwent a renovation to handle the increase in tourism more effectively. Visitors wishing to drive into Alaska will have to take the Alaska Highway that links the state to Canada.

Experiencing Alaska

Alaska is not the place to try out your survivor skills. The land is rugged and filled with wildlife like bears, wolves and moose. In fact, many people may not realize it but the moose is one of the most dangerous animals in the world if it is rutting season, even more so than a grizzly bear! So, it's wise to always use a guide when traversing through Alaska's wilderness.

However, despite (or because of) the ruggedness of the climate and environment, Alaska travel is one of the most satisfying nature escapes on the planet. Hiking, biking, kayaking and many other outdoor activities will reveal the multitude of Alaska's treasures. Plus, fishing and other wildlife expeditions like whale watching are favorite tourist activities.

Alaska features many great national parks and nature preserves. Some of the best include Denali National Park and Preserve, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and Katmai National Park and Preserve. Plus, there are month-long expeditions to Mount McKinley for those serious about Alaska tours.

Eating Alaskan-Style

Alaska's cuisine is primarily seafood, due to its vast amount of fishing opportunities. Most restaurants feature daily specials that really do come right off the boat! Of course, Alaska is famous for its King and Snow Crab harvests, and you can get your fill here on that succulent morsel! For meat lovers, reindeer is the meat of choice in Alaska and it is served in the form of everything from sausage to steaks.

Besides the plentiful food supplies, Alaska is also well known for its love of beer. The city of Anchorage has four breweries! One of the most visited festivals in Alaska is the Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine event that happens every January.

Where to Stay in Alaska

Believe it or not, Alaska is home to some truly wonderful hotels. From cozy little chalets to massive, luxury hotels, Alaska has it all! Of course, the best chance of finding a luxury suite is in one of the larger cities like Anchorage, but accommodations are available pretty much wherever there is civilization.

The Hotel Alyeska in Anchorage is beautifully located on Mount Alyeskas. The hotel features over 68 world-class ski runs and an unbelievable view.
