Canada

Canada

Crystal clean lakes, snow-capped mountain ranges and vast areas of wilderness teeming with elk are usually what come to mind when one thinks about Canada. Well, that's exactly what can be found in the Great White North, but that's not all. Canada travel brings you to the second largest country in the world, and although much of it is unpopulated, the parts that are densly populated offer travelers plenty of vacation options. But since it is such a huge country, you may be better served visiting a certain section of Canada rather than over-extending your vacation's expectations.

The Regions of Canada

Canada is divided into 10 provinces. Here's what you can expect at each of them.

* British Columbia -- The British Columbia province is the southwestern section of the continent. Due to the large mountains of the region, it's usually visited by vacationers looking for an "Ecotour." Kayaking, mountain climbing and hiking are popular activities in this part of Canada. Some of the cities of the area include Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Surrey.

* Alberta -- Alberta is situated just to the east of British Columbia and is a favorite destination for skiers. Its two major cities, Calgary and Edmonton, offer many of the same conveniences found in major cities across the United States. The many lakes found in Alberta make for fine opportunities for water sports in the summer and both the Calgary Zoo and the Calgary Tower are popular with visitors. Any number of flights to Canada will bring you to Alberta.

* Saskatchewan -- Saskatchewan is made up of mostly flat prairie land in the southern region while the north is home to 100,000 lakes. Ecotourism is the name of the game in this province of Canada as well. Hunting and fishing trips are also some of the more common types of vacations to Saskatchewan.

* Manitoba -- Also heavily covered in prairies, Manitoba is one of Canada's friendliest provinces. Winnipeg is one of the most visited cities in Manitoba. The Assiniboine Park and Conservatory are popular with tourists, as well as the Royal Canadian Mint. The International Peace Garden also lies on the border between this province of Canada and North Dakota.

* Ontario -- Ontario is the second largest province in Canada and the home of Niagara Falls, one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world. Other reasons people visit Ontario is to hike the Sleeping Giant or one of the other numerous trails in the area. World-class fishing can also be enjoyed in Ontario. Stay at one of the fine Canada hotels in Ontario and see all that Canada has to offer.

* Quebec -- Quebec is the largest province in Canada and is home to 22 provincial parks. There are also three casinos and over 400 museums. Montreal is home to many famous festivals including the Montreal International Jazz Festival and the Just for Laughs Festival.

* New Brunswick -- New Brunswick is home to some strange sights, some of which are the most interesting Canada attractions. From the roadside fruit and vegetable stands selling freakishly large foods, to the Reversing Falls, where the flow of the Saint John River actually reverses when the tide is high at the Bay of Fundy. It’s also home to the largest whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere called Old Sow. This place is as odd as it is beautiful. Numerous National parks are also available in New Brunswick for the hiking or camping enthusiast.

* Nova Scotia -- Nova Scotia is best visited during the months of June to October to get the best weather. Many outdoor activities are available like canoeing, hiking or bird watching for the nature lover. There's also the picturesque Peggy's Cove Lighthouse and The Southern Nova Scotia Biosphere, the largest protected wilderness area in Canada, and one of the best .

* Prince Edward Island -- The smallest province in Canada, the beaches and seafood are the main draw for tourists. It’s also the home of the famous Anne of Green Gables House. For some refinement, enjoy a trip to the Victoria Playhouse and catch a show.

* Newfoundland and Labrador -- The island of Newfoundland and the area of Labrador are some of the most scenic places in all of Canada. Rugged and gorgeous, these lands offer whale-watching tours, iceberg boat tours, skiing and snowboarding among other outdoor activities. Take a hike through Gros Morne National Park or Terra Nova National Park for a wilderness experience.

While each of the provinces of Canada offer great opportunities for Ecotourism and outdoor activities, the differences lie in the details. Some regions have cities that are more modern, while others are scarcely populated. To learn more about these provinces and the secrets they hold, check online before planning your Canada vacation.
