The island of Cozumel is located just 12 miles away from the Yucatan coast and is a major tourist attraction and a popular stop for Mexico cruises! The waters surrounding the island are so clear and calm that Jacques Cousteau once referred to it as the best diving area in the world.
A major draw for tourists is the Palancar Reef, which is the second largest barrier reef in the world. Home to many exotic marine wildlife species, the reef is frequented by scuba divers and snorkelers on a daily basis.
For tourists who want a break from the water activities, many tours take vacationers to the ancient Mayan shrine of Ixchel. During the height of the Mayan empire, many citizens were required to visit the shrine at lease once in their lifetime.
Vacationers can also opt to take an eco-tour towards the swampy, jungle located in the center of the island. Another big tourist draw is Chankanaab National Park, which is an undeveloped and protected area on the southern tip of the island. In this same area is the Columbia Lagoon, where tourists can see many of the species that are indigenous to Cozumel.
