San Antonio's Top Reviewed Festivals

Year round, San Antonio offers something for everyone! Not only will you find a wide variety of activities that are available on a daily basis, but special events that are spread across San Antonio's annual calendar. Whether you're into fine food and wine, the American Southwest culture, ground-breaking independent film or various concerts and music fests, the city of San Antonio has them penciled into the annual schedule. Here are a handful of festival reviews for your consideration.

San Antonio Underground Film Festival

For film aficionados, the San Antonio Underground Film Festival is another festival you can put on your list of "things to do." The dates will vary from year to year, but the festival generally takes place early in the summer and has enjoyed steady growth over the past several years. The 2007 festival took place in late June, ran full slates and offered the awards ceremony over the course of three days. The festival entries were screened at the world-famous Aztec Theatre on the river, as well as nearby San Antonio College, both of which can be accessed when you take advantage of a San Antonio car rental.

San Antonio New World Wine & Food Festival

Scrap Thanksgiving and reschedule your days of holiday over-eating and indulgence. In 2007, the San Antonio New World Wine & Food Festival will take place on November 7-11, and promises to offer more of the world's finest! Enjoy new wines from all world regions, and partake in new creations presented by some world renowned chefs. Events are sold separately, and it should be kept in mind that NO ONE under the age of 21 is permitted at the festival events. San Antonio restaurants are fantastic, but festival dining adds some extra fun, as well.

Ford Holiday River Parade & Lighting Ceremony

If you have enjoyed San Antonio's gorgeous River Walk during the summer months, then you owe it to yourself to see it when lit for the holiday season. After you've stuffed yourself on Thanksgiving, you can relax on Friday by joining the 150,000 other individuals at the River Walk for one of the most beautiful holiday lighting ceremonies in the world. It may not rival the tradition of New York City's Rockefeller Center, yet it most certainly rivals the beauty!

Margarita Pour-Off

Who's thirsty? Whether you like them frozen or on the rocks, with or without salt, traditional or specialty flavored, for one day out of the year in San Antonio, margaritas flow much like the San Antonio River. This festival has become uniquely San Antonio, and a favorite of not only margarita lovers, but local restaurant and bar owners who are competing for the coveted prize of San Antonio's best margarita, and the title of "Margarita Pour-Off Champion." The event has become a late summer tradition in San Antonio, and for anyone over the age of 21, there is music, eats, and of course...margaritas! Venture out from your San Antonio hotel, and have a tasty beverage!

Fiesta San Antonio

And to save the best for last! Fiesta San Antonio is a 10-day, city-wide festival that draws nearly 4 million people to over 100 events. It's my personal belief that the festival plays out over the last 10 days in April because people need to unwind after the April 15th tax deadline. And to categorize the unwinding that takes place during Fiesta San Antonio, you'll find the following: Parades, sporting events, contests, concerts, pageants, food, food, food, drinks, a grand carnival and numerous other activities that will put a smile on your face and a sense of satisfaction in your soul.

Again, these are just a few festivals that make up the fabric and thread of the uniquely American city of San Antonio. You'll never have a problem finding more festivals if one of these doesn't seem to strike your favorite chord. A little bit of research on the Internet will show you how to get tickets for festivals in San Antonio. However, if you're looking for about 50 festivals rolled up into one, hop, skip or fly over to San Antonio in late April and you won't leave disappointed!
