Discover a World of Outdoor Adventure in the Apostle Islands
The Apostle Islands are group of 21 islands and a 12 miles of mainland in Lake Superior off Wisconsin's Bayfield Peninsula. The destination offers cave passageways, plenty of outdoor activities and, of course, beaches. The islands are also home to more lighthouses than any other national park, with eight beautiful towers on six islands.
One of the more mysterious attractions is Michigan Island Lighthouse, which was originally contracted to be built in the town of La Pointe. For reasons unknown, it was constructed 17 miles away from its intended location. Today, there are two houses on Michigan Island, but the mystery of why the first lighthouse was erected there remains unsolved.
To see the islands in all their glory, you'll want to take a kayak tour. However, they're not all created equal. REI offers a four-day package that includes meals, camping and instruction for a non-member rate of $755. Meanwhile, Trek and Trail offers a comparable package for $465 per person. That's 40 percent cheaper than REI's tour.
So, if you're looking to take your family on an island vacation, head to the Midwest. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the what you can get for your money on this relaxing and scenic escape.
