Antoine Soulard, one of the original proprietors of the historic Soulard neighborhood in south St. Louis, was a native of New Orleans. The Cajun zest was definitely not lost in transition to the north, and the 1860's Hard Shell Café substantiates the Delta legacy. The café is one of 3 sites conjoined at the kitchen, with the 1860's Saloon and Geyer House providing diverse experiences. The Saloon has a tavern feel, complete with a house band. A dinner at the Hard Shell energizes the evening with the band gratis. And don't be fooled by the rugged facade. Let's just say that after indulging in the crawfish etouffee and the jalepeno cornbread, it's a wrap. You'll be back.
