1.Stay on the Cruise Ship and leave the City to the real tourists...

Acapulco is a blast. Not sure what all the panic and fear is about from the Cruise ship people. I have been there twice now just returned a week ago. The people are nice helpful and while freelance tour operators and people hawking stuff can be aggressive As they can ANYWHERE a simple "no Gracias" will have them moving on.

We stayed at the Fiesta Americana right on Playa Condesa. Did all the tourista stuff. The cliff divers the fort museum the flea market (not the one on The costera) para sailing bungee jumping scuba etc. At night we hit the restaurants (from the upscale Kookaburra to the decidedly non upscale El Fogon) which were all great to the bars and nightclubs.
The city is no longer the hot spot it was for Americans but has a huge Mexican tourist base (the weekend getaway for Mexico City money) and Europeans. IF you want to be a typical tourist you can go to Hooters or Hard Rock or Bennigans.
Just dont go looking for trouble and you will be fine. And for the love of God don't treat it like a Zoo...staring at everything and not interacting. Get Involved. MEET people listen to them take their suggestions. Don't be afraid to get out of your air-conditioned diet coke drinking environment. You'll have a blast!

My honey and I recently returned from a fabulous trip to Acapulco with two other couples. It was the first time there for a few of us. My honey and I recently returned from a fabulous trip to Acapulco with two other couples. It was the first time there for a few of us. We decided to forego the hotel scene and rent Casa Delfin a private home. This is absolutely the way to go! It felt luxurious staying in this private home with incredible views of the Acapulco bay AND it was even more economical for us than a nice hotel for the same number of nights.

There was ample space to unwind and relax in the house. Three spacious bedrooms a private infinity pool with both sun and shade and a staff who prepared incredible meals for us… We were so comfortable that we had to force ourselves out to do some sightseeing. The owners were accommodating and they allow guests who stay at the home to use their membership to their private club right on the edge of Acapulco Bay. In addition to Casa Delfin they have another luxury home that sleeps over 30 people…it would be awesome for a family reunion. Our friends had such a great time that they are considering it for a destination wedding. You can check out their site (http://www.acapulco-villa-rentals.com/) to see both properties. I highly recommend considering renting one of the homes instead of booking a hotel.

As the title says the pearl of the Pacific while not quite as flamboyant a destination as back in the day when all the hollywood gang used to hang out here Acapulco's beauty remains. There are countless restaurants & bars/clubs of all variety's in which to choose from. This city stretches about 7 miles from the start of the Costera miguel aleman the main road through the heart of town & offers a wide variety of things to do & places to see. You can still go out to eat in a great modest restaurant for about 40-50 bucks a couple with drinks..

Acapulco has changed some over 20 + years but the weather & view of the bay is still absolutely the most beautiful I have ever seen. There are many nice affordable hotels for less then 100 USD per night & 100's of affordable restaurants in town that offer authentic mexican dishes & fresh seafood .The Bay is cleaner today then from 20 years ago & the main drag while not prestine by any means is not strewn with garbage as others reporting here would have you believe. This is a very rustic destination & if your the Glitzy resort type of person who plops in a lounge chair go to cancun for certain.Acapulco is for the nightlife Weather Restaurants and the scenic tours that you just do not see in many places...For those wanting the above stay in the heart of town on the Costera miguel Aleman & for those wanting the lounge chairs and upscale resorts stay in the Diamante area near the airport where you can get a more Cancun feel..
