Cairo

Cairo contains worlds within worlds, full of charm and contradictions. It is a maddening city with its incessant crowds, noise and pollution. Yet, it beckons you to linger and explore the various districts - each a different piece of the puzzle, evoking a fragment of Cairo's rich 7000 year history. A walk down any street in Cairo is a feast for the senses, and exploring beyond the popular districts below will not fail to fascinate.

Central Cairo

The current heart of Cairo, the downtown region roughly centered on Midan Tahrir, stretches east to Ramses Station and south to Garden City. It is relatively young, as only in the mid 1800s was this area west of Ezbekiya to the Nile drained and developed. The architecture of the downtown cacophony of shops, restaurants, theaters, offices, apartment buildings, and hotels possesses an old-world elegance. Stand at Midan Talat Harb and you could almost imagine you were in Paris…well, until you are approached by an old man in a galabeya peddling papyrus.

The area also boasts numerous museums and contemporary art galleries. ... more

The natives are friendly.....but as anywhere negotiate the price. Carry exact change they do not like to give change and bring your own paper products....tissues esp. Dare to NOT go with the travel agency and be bold enough to go to Old Cairo and forego NEW Cairo...so much more to see. Females NEVER travel alone, go in groups or with a male companion.... More

I travelled to Cairo many times in my 2 month stay in Egypt. I was there from November 2008-Jan 2009. Keep an open mind. Approach with the fact that Egypt is one of the oldest civilizations of all time...after all if it wasn't would you still want to go? Don't blame the natives for trying to make a living hopefully bring some salvation back to the U.S by exercising some common principals of mutual respect...in other words when in Rome do as the Romans Do. Don't blame the natives for trying to make a living hopefully bring some salvation back to the U.S by exercising some common principals of mutual respect...in other words when in Rome do as the Romans Do. There are both Old Cairo & New Cairo and to tell you the truth while I did enjoy New Cairo I think I actually felt the character of Old Cairo better!!!! I would also recommend travelling to Benha Egypt its in the agricultural belt and the Oranges are fantastic there!! Still try to remember to exercise common sense with your purse strings as Five Pounds and 56 Piestres are worth ONE American Dollar(last I looked). There now you have some guidance!! Enjoy your trip!!!
