Family lives in Ewa Beach. Very beautiful area. Only problem I see now are the cost of flights to Honolulu. I would fly from LAX round trip $400 max five times a year. It's now $700 since Aloha Airlines went BK. Looks like I won't be visiting my beloved island as much....although my daughter is begging me to come live there. I may just have to....oh darn! .... More

I grew up near Aiea (\up the street and turn left until you hit ocean\) in Ewa Beach. Back then shopping was at Gem Arakawa's Pearlridge and Ala Moana (Chinatown for fresh fruits). In the past couple of decades THE BEST shopping and THE BEST prices can be found at Aloha Stadium Swapmeet in Aiea. Save all the souvenir shopping (and some snack food shopping) for the Swapmeet - open Saturday Sunday and Wednesday; closes early on game day. You can buy SO MUCH MORE for your hard earned money! Word to the wise - wear comfortable shoes slather on A LOT of sunscreen (you don't know how many people come looking normal and leave looking like over-cooked lobsters!) and pace yourself. Cheap shuttles available from Wai'ki'ki.The swapmeet shopping is LARGE! Have fun! P.S. - you can make a day out of it - go to USS Arizona and Mighty Mo' in the early morning - and head to the swapmeet after.

I live in Aiea! - I think it's great - I'm about a mile up a hill overlooking Pearl Harbor - the Arizona USS Missouri..... and Aloha Stadium - I hear the concerts;-) Aiea is central - 10-12 minutes to the airport close to the freeway in either direction and great stores/restaurants in the Aiea/Pearl City area (Pearlridge Sam's Club Home Depot Tony Roma's Chilis....l.) Aiea is a small town with a lot of big city amenities.... More
