This day marks the New Year for Muslims worldwide. It is the first day of Moharram, occurring several days before Ashura. On this day, Al Heijra, the holy prophet Muhammad and his companions undertook the journey from Mecca to Medina. Since the prophet was escaping persecution in his hometown and was welcomed by the people of Medina, this day is marked as an important date in Islamic history. Hence, it was marked as the first day of the Islamic calendar.
