1.Old Towne Alexandria doesn't want your business

Old Towne Alexandria is one of the few places in America in December 2008 that is doing such brisk retail and restaurant business that they'd just as soon you'd stay away. Finding street parking in this densely packed enclave the evening of Friday Dec. 5th seemed miraculous but this writer's elation was short-lived. Old Towne Alexandria is one of the few places in America in December 2008 that is doing such brisk retail and restaurant business that they'd just as soon you'd stay away. Finding street parking in this densely packed enclave the evening of Friday Dec. 5th seemed miraculous but this writer's elation was short-lived. After spending close to $200 in 2 retail shops and an additional $150 at a King Street restaurant I was dismayed to emerge and find a $40.00 parking ticket on my car with no meter in sight. Clearly the retailers and dining establishments of Old Towne would prefer that I shop and dine in Georgetown Penn Quarter Adams Morgan or Dupont Circle. Added to this the stench of cigarette smoke in my hair and clothiing upon departing from said restaurant leads this writer to believe that the city fathers of Old Towne are not only indifferent to my wallet they want me dead.

3.The Masonic Temple in Alexandria

Overlooking downtown Alexandria is a building that resembles the ancient lighthouse of Alexandria Egypt. This is the George Washington Masonic Temple. Every lodge of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons fraternity contributes to the upkeep of the Temple. George Washington was an active Mason. It is definitely a wonder to see.... More

4.Old Town is charming

I've been to Old Town Alexandria many times and it is a charming historic town that sits right on the shore of the Potomac River. There are many shops and historic houses as well as some pretty good restaurants. It's very enjoyable to walk around and there is a bike trail that bisects the town and connects Mt. Vernon to Washinton DC. Also there is an art center called the Torpedo Factory (it actually was one during WWII) where you can view and purchase local art and watch the artists in acti... More
