A college town if there ever was one - surrounding this New England town are FIVE colleges: Hampshire Amherst UMass Amherst Smith and Mount Holyoke. There are great shops restaurants along the main street but mostly there is academia. If you're in Amherst you've got to visit at least one of the liberal arts institutions in the area: Hampshire is home to the Eric Carl Museum Mount Holyoke is ranked by Princeton Review as having one of the most gorgeous campuses and one of the most impressive libraries Smith is in the midst of a cute hippy-ish town affectionately referred to as 'Noho' (Northampton) Amherst College is off the main drag smack in the middle of downtown Amherst and UMass at Amherst is the state University's main campus.
