Amsterdam is wonderful 
We were in A'dam for 6 nights in 2003.  Loved the museums, canals, was moved by the Anne Frank house, etc.  There was a juxtaposition of charm and tawdriness (red light district, etc.) that we hadn't seen elsewhere.  We enjoyed spending time sitting at outdoor cafes along the canals.  We only stopped to "have a smoke" on our last afternoon there...just to say we had done it.
I got to return for just a couple of nights in 2006 and enjoyed the city once again.  I could easily go back.  The Van Gogh museum and Rijksmuseum are always worth a 2nd visit, that's for sure.
