Ankara is great!
Ankara is one of the safest and most interesting places I have been to. I was there for business for about 3 weeks. Like other places in Turkey, Ankara's biggest asset is people. Turkish people are the friendliest, kindest people in the world. I have been to many places in the world, no other nation can surpass the friendliness of the people of Turkey. Ankara, to my surprise, had a lot of history. Lots of historic places to visit dating all the way from pre-Romans, Romans to Ottomans. The City offers great areas to shop, open bazaars, modern shopping malls and outdoor cafes and dining areas. Everything is very inexpensive. One should definitely visit the open bazaar in Ulus and more modern shopping areas in Kizilay. And yes they do have Starbucks and McDonalds if you look for something familiar. Ataturk's Mausoleum, Anitkabir, is a great place to visit not only to pay respects to this great visionary but also to witness how even so many years after his death, this great man lives in the hearts and souls of Turkish people.
