There are five ski TOWNS in Colorado (ie a history with cowboys and silver mining that predates the establishment of the ski industry): Aspen, Telluride, Breckenridge, Steamboat and Crested Butte. These places are more charming, historic and centralized which means easy to walk around. The others, like Vail or Beaver Creek (or anything in Utah for that matter) are resorts which means they were obstensively created in the sixties or seventies following, in many instances, a Disneyesque, phony planning structure. Observe the Austrian-village facade theme that prevades Vail-an incongruous, hodgepodge of insipid, cookie cutter condo complexes surrounding the pseudo-Austrian strasse. The skiing is slightly better in Vail though if that's all you're after. Otherwise go bold and go ASPEN. It's not cheap but offers the best restaurants, nightlife, art galleries and shopping of any of the others hands down and you can walk everywhere! The summers in Aspen are almost better but get there in June, July or August!
