Hobart

Amazingly diverse and stunningly beautiful, Hobart sits at the foot of Mount Wellington and on the banks of the Derwent River. A city of contrasts, and Australia's smallest and most southerly city, Hobart offers sophisticated nightlife and World Heritage wilderness within a geographically compact area. Settled by the British in 1803, Hobart's convict heritage remains evident in the architecture, with many unspoiled Georgian and Victorian buildings. An increased demand for inner-city living has seen recent growth of townhouse and apartment-style developments.

Central Hobart & The Queen's Domain Here, the ambience of yesteryear blends with today's conveniences. Stroll around the business district and enjoy the charms of the Cat and Fiddle Arcade's animated clock, or visit the oldest theatre (Theatre Royal) in Australia. To the north lie the Botanical Gardens and Government House. In close proximity is the sporting centre of Hobart, the Queen's Domain, home of the aquatic, tennis and athletics centres.

This was the most awesome day of my trip to Australia/NZ. We came by way of cruise ship. Our excursion was a downhill bike ride and we had such an up close and personal experience with Hobart. When done with our bike ride down Mt. Wellington, we enjoyed the docks and really got a feel for life on the water in Hobart. We went from mountainous terrain to lush greenery of the park nearby to the smell of the water. This was our most favorite part of our 3 week trip and healthy as well. We look forwa... More

We look forward to retuning one day.

Normally my wife and I don't linger in the major cities of places we visit. As is sometimes said the best thing about Auckland is that it is only about 20 km from New Zealand. In the case of Hobart Tasmania is even closer maybe 5 km. We found Hobart to be a delightful place with friendly people excellent restaurants and bars and decent hotels at a fair tariff. As is our practice we got out of the City quickly but were struck that we didn't feel like we were escaping. Tasmania truly should be seen before any more \civilization\ gets there. Whether we goes to the shoreside south of Hobart and Bruny Island up the east coast to Freycinet N.P. or west to the wilds in the vicinity of Strahan it is strikingly beautiful. The only downside is in the mining sector between Hobart and Strahan but even that is good to see if only to appreciate how easy it is to screw up our environment if we aren't careful.

Excellent seafood fresh oysters salmon scallops and alalone abound and a trip to the Saturday market at Salamanca Place in Hobart is a must. Check out the excellent art galleries in that area too. Pleasant drive along the Tamar River valley just north of Launceston visiting the vineyards sampling good white wines is a pleasant way to spend a day. In summer there are tours and viewings of Fairy Penguins as they return to their burrows from Bass Straight each evening at Low Head kids always enjoy this tour. Good eating at the local pub in Georgetown before the tour.
