In July 2001 a local radio station sponsored a cruise to Tahiti through a couple associated with a local travel agency. It was quite an adventure. We flew from Cleveland Ohio to LA for an overnight and a flight from LAX to Papeete Tahiti. For the next 9 days we cruised the waters around the islands of French Polynesia. The cruise stopped at five islands the last being Bora Bora. I had my first experience snorkeling and close encounters with sting rays and sharks. The scenery was so breathtaking from the balconey on my ship to the colorful sealife under water. I haven't been to Hawaiiyet but I'm afraid the experience will not compare with the unspoiled beauty of French Polynesia. The weather was warm (in the 80's most days) and only one day was spoiled by rain and cancelled our trip to the Island of Huahine. Unbelievable the schools were out for winter vacation. I took advantage of multiple tours eg a tour to a vanilla plantation and a black pearl farm. One of my tour mates was a teacher and because she could communicate with the natives got a more intimate tour of the islands. Most natives who deal with the tourists speak English but the others speak French and Polynesian. I am so glad I took the chance to go even though I didn't know anyone personally. The travel agents were able to match me up with another female tourist from NE Ohio and we were able to share a cabin fairly comfortably.

We were here for five days and Rangiroa for five days and Rangiroa is superior if you want activities like scuba or snorkeling especially for the money. If you are looking for luxury and shopping and restaurants and services then Bora Bora is more for you. I can see why honeymooners go to Bora Bora as you have lots of time on your hands. We stayed in over water huts at the new St. Regis. The huts rooms are 1800 sq ft. apiece and are wonderful. The St. Regis staff was all very nice and the atmosphere was relaxing. There are also some beach huts and a 4100 sq ft house you can stay in. The hotel is top notch is every sense. You are basically dependent on them for food and activities. The hotel is on the inside of the ring of land that surrounds the island and the hotel provides boat service to and from the island if you want to go there. You can take hikes on the island or go to non-hotel restaurants and shops.

Went to Bora Bora in July 2000 and plan to go again in 2009 or 2010. The lack of things to do adds to the beauty of Bora Bora. Time seems to slow down reality seems blurred. The only negative about Bora Bora is that once you leave you find yourself dreaming about returning. Here's a link to a great video of Bora Bora. http://cnttriptakes.cinevegas.com/kickapps/_Paradise-You-decide/video/124392/5841.html... More
