Once we heard the native name for Ayers Rock and the story behind the English name we decided to also call it Uluru. It is a dry and majestic part of the country and reminds me in some ways of the American South West. The colors of the ground the different outcroppings and the sky change dramatically throughout the day. We were there in Late October of 2007 and were quite surprised to experience rain showers that lasted a few minutes then stopped and took all the moisture with it. We went to a \Sounds of Silence\ dinner at an outcropping between Uluru and another group of rock formations.and had appetizers and champagne as the sun was getting ready to set. There were incredible cloud formations patches of sun streaming through like yellow strands of hair and gray areas where you could see sheets of rain falling. In some areas the rain stopped? Evaporated? before it hit the ground. As we stood admiring the views all around us we felt the sprinkles then a true downpour of rain. Some of the group wanted to quit and go get dinner somewhere dry. When it stopped we walked down to the tables for our dinner outdoors and things dried off pretty quickly. No one melted. As we ate the sky turned all kinds of shades of pink magenta and purple as the setting sun cast its last light onto the undersides of the remaining clouds. At the end of the meal the lights were turned down and a guide took us on a tour of the night sky and constelations and told us the stories of the stars and the simularities of this star lore to that of other cultures around the southern hemisphere. The next morning was to the bus by 4:30 and to a spot about 1 mile from the base on the east side of Uluru to watch the SUNRISE! The change in the sky from indigo through shades of yellow and orange to light sky blue was magnificent and transformed Uluru from black to red to orange as shadows merged then became distinct showing not a smooth rock but a rugged time etched monument! BEAUTIFUL!
