Cultural aspects are great. Smog and spitting in public is prevalent. Language is a major issue, and cabs are the most difficult. Always get the name of the place you are going to and your hotel written in Chinese. Most times, that didn't even help, and we had to have our destinations circled on a map. We stayed in hostels for $12.oo, and the young people there seemed to know more English than the bigger hotel staffs. Food is fine and cheap, but you won't find eggs or pancakes for breakfast! Coffee; not so much. We were in China for 3 weeks, and I never felt unsafe. We also took side trips to Xi'an, Tibet , The Yangtze, and Inner Mongolia.
