Belize City, Belize: When to Go and Weather

Weather: Like that of many Central American countries, Belize weather doesn't fall into the traditional four seasons. Belize City experiences just two seasons - dry and rainy - thanks to the nation's location on the Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately, the coastal location also means that Belize City has been ravaged by hurricanes more than once. Tropical storms and hurricanes occur, of course, during the rainy season, which lasts from June through November. Temperatures reach into the high 80s during these months, and the humid tropical air makes the city feel even hotter. During this rainy season, Belize City receives plenty of rain. October is the rainiest month, with an average of 10 inches of precipitation, but July, September, and November also see more than 8 inches of rain that's often associated with tropical storms at sea. Check the National Hurricane Center at www.nhc.noaa.gov. to track predicted storms. Though hurricanes can strike the area early in July, the months of August and September pose the strongest weather threat, The dry season, on the other hand, starts in December and runs through May. Temperatures average 72 degrees during these months, which, in combination with the calm, sunny conditions, makes the season a popular one with travelers. January is the coolest month, and May the warmest, but there's not a great deal of variation between the start and end of the dry season.

For the big storms and probability of hurricanes, you'll want to refer to international control centers and sources (see above.) But for day-to-day news on weather conditions, check local papers like the Belize Times.or TV stations like Channel 5 Belize..

When to Go: Peak Season

Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to Belize starting around December's winter holidays and through May. Belize City sees plenty of these adventure travelers passing through on their way to more remote dive areas, and cruise ships dock nearby the city frequently, unloading hundreds of guidebook-toting passengers for a day or two of sightseeing. Hotel rates are high now, and the weather almost always fair: nearly every day, the sun shines and the temperatures remain in the comfortable 70s and 80s. Even if the city seems crowded with visitors, keep in mind that many are just passing through - Belize City is a hub of transport to the country's Mayan sites and dive areas.

When to Go: Off Season

August and September are the months when Belize City braces for the worst. Hurricanes and tropical storms can bring heavy rains and winds to the coast as hurricane season kicks into full swing, driving out crowds and scaring off tourists. October and November are usually calmer, weather-wise, and symbolize the end of the storm season. If you're willing to brave the elements or take a chance on inclement weather, you'll definitely save money on hotels - and when the sun does shine, you'll have the beach to yourself. Just be sure to check weather forecasts before you plan a week of sightseeing and snorkeling.

When to Go: Shoulder Season

June and July constitute Belize City's shoulder season. Temperatures are a little hotter than the average, often reaching into the high 80s and 90s, and the humidity can be intense, but most importantly, this is the start of the hurricane season. Many tourists are afraid to travel at this time, but in reality, few tropical storms affect Belize City weather during June and July. Hotel rates are discounted, restaurants are emptier, and of course, the beach features plenty of unpopulated stretches where you can sunbathe in peace. This time is a little warmer than usual and somewhat risky in terms of storm weather - some visitors think that it's a fair tradeoff for lower prices and smaller crowds.
