Bethesda Methodist Church
Cavalla Hill
Montserrat, Montserrat
The Methodists arrived in Montserrat around 1820, and by 1839 had built a mission station for slaves at Cavalla Hill. In 1885 a stone chapel replaced the dilapidated wooden building, and this date is recorded on a stone plaque. The building was destroyed by the 1899 hurricane and again by the 1935 earthquake, but was rebuilt each time, resulting in the present church. Sunday divine worship service begins at 9a. There are two other active Methodist churches, at Judy Piece and Salem. Three others were severely damaged or destroyed by the volcanic eruptions in 1997.
