What a surprise to land on a black island with names written on the rocks . . when 20 minutes previously we had been on lush green Maui. I thought we must have landed on the moon! But we rented a car and drove through all of this desolate land to our hotel . . the Hilton Waikoloa Village. It was a beautiful place with trains and boats to get you from place to place . . but hardly worth the money. It is expensive and in a location that is not close to anything. When we return to the Big Island we will stay in one of the hotels in Kona. I found Kona to be a fasinating place . . and I particularly liked the old church and loved the Hard Rock Cafe with the balcony overlooking beautiful sunsets on the beach. The waterfalls between Kona and Hilo are awesome. The Painted Church is well worth the drive to find it. And don't miss the Tiki Village the coffee plantations the volcano and the Parker Ranch Cafe. I was amazed at the deversity of this island. I understand you can even snow ski there. Keep up the good work Big Island!
