I lived near Bilbao from Jan to May 2008 while studying at the University of Deusto and absoloutely fell in the love with the city surrounding towns and the Basque Country in general. The greater Bilbao area certainly has everything a traveler could want: a walkable clean city; great food; easy transportation; a river; mountains; and even beaches! The greater Bilbao area certainly has everything a traveler could want: a walkable clean city; great food; easy transportation; a river; mountains; and even beaches! You can easily walk the entire downtown area or you can take one of the numerous forms of public transportation. A trip to the beach (Algorta Sopelana Larrabasterra Plentzia...) or to see Puerto Viejo (Algorta) or the Puente Colgante (Las Arenas) is just a 15-25 minute metro ride.

Aside from accessibility Bilbao certainly has an interesting Spanish style with a distinctly Basque flair (you'll quickly notice that all signs are in two languages!). Visit the Guggenheim walk the Zubizuri (white Calatrava bridge) shop Casco Viejo on a crowded Saturday afternoon stroll the path along La Ria and tomar pintxos in Plaza Nueva -- Bilbao is a relaxing Spanish city that strays from the typical tourist route through Spain.

What to say about my city im a 19 years old kid cant say bad things about it because i/you can have everything i/you want here its small and you have everything you just need a map for knowing where places are. On my experience about bringins exchange students from the US to my house has been wonderfull they've loved it and also came the next years and still coming this summer(2008). For people finding fun/ traveling/parties between 16 and 50 its perfect there are every kind of different places for enjoyingwith discos with all the different types of music for every ages. best examples \mao mao beach\ & \fever\ this lattest one with webpage fever.esAlso we have the Guggenheim museum the only one in spain. Also \Bellas Artes\ art museum my exchange students loved it even not liking arts. What else can i say..Bilbao is an old city which has changed and grow up a lot but still conservates old bridges that connect towns with other towns such \El puente colgante\ and the newest one \calatraba\ bridge this last architect name can be famous for you there are bridges in the whole world(by my known there is a long one in boston and other one in new york) he always paint them white color as curious.Shopping is more expensive than in the US thats important to know. But you can find places in the old town of bilbao called \ Casco viejo\ where youll find the cheapest prices than in the \Gran Vía\ street.About the airport its not connected by the metro lines yet. it'll be around 2010-2012 year tho. By now you can take a taxi that will cost around 24€(25$) or go to the \san mames\ bus station where its connected by metro first line and take the bus to the airport(2$).Bilbao has information houses around. you will notice where they are easily and they'll explain you probably better than me.By now have a good year and hope you like my city if you come someday. Sorry for my unexpert english and hope you understood everything.Thank you all.-Jon from Bilbao

Anyone who has traveled to Spain but not to Bilbao is in for a wonderful surprise. This is one of the most culturally-rich cities in the country. A seaport in northern Spain Bilbao is situated about 30 minutes from the French border. It shares its Basque heritage with its fellow basques in the Pyrenees mountains of both France and Spain. The most unforgettable part of my trip there was really not the Guggenheim. Yes. This titanium museum is striking both in its art and architecture. But I was more taken with the expansive beauty of the city. Spaniards might wonder aloud if they heard me say that. Why? Up until the construction of the Guggenheim and the \renaissance\ Bilbao experienced in the past 15 years Bilbao was not a tourist destination. All that has changed and I highly recommend a visit to this Spanish/Basque city. But be forewarned: Euskadi the native language is spoken as often as Spanish. I stayed at the Bilbao Sheraton Hotel a 5-star hotel that was ultra modern. Its location made it easy to walk to the Guggenheim and around the city. There are plenty of pubs coffee shops and tapas bars to choose from in Bilbao. The metro designed by famous architect N. Foster is awesome. The parks and esplanades are green and welcoming. You are sure to notice a high gleaming bridge arched within the city. This is the work of world-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava who is scheduled to buildequally impressive bridges for Dallas Texas. After traveling to Spain several times and to many of its cities I'd return to Bilbao in a heartbeat.
