The farther from the city the more friendly the people the wilder the beaches and the less clothing was required. James Micheneer famously described Bora Bora as the most beautiful place on earth and I would be a fool to disagree with him. Of course with the physical beauty of the islands you must include the friendliness and sense of joy of the islanders. My first attempt at snorkeling was in the lagoon. The local young lads thought it was hilarious that I did not know that you must blow through the snorkel before taking a breath in. I had to laugh with them (after I was able to breathe).

I went to Bora Bora as a backpacker en route to Australia and New Zealand in February 1989. I was a young solo traveler and within a few hours met the kindest most helpful travelers and locals alike. Because Bora Bora was so expensive I didn't think I'd be able to afford staying in the low key oceanfront tiki hut much more than a night. My luck changed the second morning of my arrival when an older Dutch woman saw me carrying my backpack up the beach looking so serious and worried. She insisted... More

Because Bora Bora was so expensive I didn't think I'd be able to afford staying in the low key oceanfront tiki hut much more than a night. My luck changed the second morning of my arrival when an older Dutch woman saw me carrying my backpack up the beach looking so serious and worried. She insisted that I share the ample tiki hut free of charge she rented with her friend and that I join them for dinner that night. Immediately we became friends and toured the island hiked snorkeled and made friend's with local artisans while taking in all of the beauty that Bora Bora has to offer. My experience in Bora Bora was purely magical memorable and filled with warm smiling faces.

My wife and I were in Bora Bora in February 1996. We were returning from New Zealand and had a stop over in Tahiti. The recent anti-nuclear protests had scared off enough tourists for us to claim a week on father-in-law's time share on Moorea where we had a week stay. We then took a ferry shuttle back to Tahiti where we then flew to Bora Bora. Stayed just two nights courtesy of a church member's brother who managed an beach side motel. We then took a ferry shuttle back to Tahiti where we then flew to Bora Bora. Stayed just two nights courtesy of a church member's brother who managed an beach side motel. Went to a French Protestant church on a Sunday. We were viewed with some curiousity since I was signing ASL to my wife as we sat in the pew. Rode bikes partly around the island. Stopped in a shop and bought tropical fish themed place mats and coasters made of flax and local wood. Took an outrigger tour of lagoon fed tamed stingrays and snorkeled. The staghorn corals were bleached damaged by a recent cyclones and pollution by over the water bungalows. Bare chested european women modestly dressed locals. Favorite photo is of local children playing in the water in the morning with a rainbow in the sky and a distant island in the background.
