In April, the city of Vientiane comes alive. Boun Pi Mai is a festival that celebrates the Lao New Year; it falls in December but is celebrated in April since the days are longer and the locals can make more use of their three days of public holidays! The festivities revolve around traditional songs and dances like Mor Lam and Ramwong. People construct sand stupas, adorned with festive streamers, to pray for health and happiness of their families. In conjunction with the New Year festivities, the festival also acts as a day to invite the rains. The religious tradition of dousing Buddha statues with water, which is then poured in a decorated trench (hang song nam pha)is performed.
