The infrasturcture is amazing. It is safe to travel. We recommend this trip to anyone. Lake Balaton is wonderful. There are cathedrals that are from 1000 A.D. Wineries from 1000 A.D. What can we say? My wife's grandparents were from the Lake Balaton are , SW of Budapest. This completed visiting all the home towns of our parents/granparents. Found Budapest charming and very scenic. Musts; The Parliament building tour, the castle heights, and a dinner with gypsy music one night. (Ours was at the Magor Prinz in the basement restaurant (arches and all) ,
Drinks and or dinner along the river another night another must (SE side) - great view.
We were there 4 days before going to Vienna, Dresde

Budapest was wonderful! Friendly, helpful people! However, late at night the cops disconnect the ticket machine for the subway and then want payment as three of them with billy clubs tell you they will call the polizei if you don't pay the fine! The next night we bought extra tickets and gave them to some other unsuspecting American tourists who were being scammed as we descended to the subway. Quite a scam! Buy tickets to subway early!
