Visited Budapest in 2006. Can't say enough good things about the people the food the wine and the city in general. Feels like a time capsule in terms of charm hospitality and pace. Visited Budapest in 2006. Can't say enough good things about the people the food the wine and the city in general. Feels like a time capsule in terms of charm hospitality and pace. The art and national museums were fascinating as well as beautiful. We visited in early December - and the streets were filled with kiosks of both food and crafts for Christmas. Not a spectacular as Vienna for Christmas - but far more charming. 4 and 5 star hotels are available and very reasonable in December. Le Meridian was excellent - great service food and the staff were extremely attentive. The Budapest Opera house is an absolute must - and extremely reasonable as compared to venues in the states. Andrassy Utca has charming cafes and restaurants with great food at reasonable prices. (Acquire a taste for goose liver - it is a treat). The weather is cold in December - but not uncomfortably so. During the week we were there the temperatures ranged from 20 to 40 f.The people are genuinely thoughtful. Not sure if this is a carryover from communism but we were always amazed how quiet people were in public venues (restaurants museums parks). Very nice change of pace compared to loud and obnoxious San Francisco. Can't recommend it highly enough!

a city for medical historiansJust one example of great medical history: The old 'Lying In Hospital'(for women about to deliver a child) is just down the street from the Hilton on the Buda* side of the city. It was here that medical pioneer Dr. Ludwig Semmelweiss identified the reason for puerperal septicemia aka 'childbed fever') which usually resulted in the death of both mother and child. a city for medical historiansJust one example of great medical history: The old 'Lying In Hospital'(for women about to deliver a child) is just down the street from the Hilton on the Buda* side of the city. It was here that medical pioneer Dr. Ludwig Semmelweiss identified the reason for puerperal septicemia aka 'childbed fever') which usually resulted in the death of both mother and child. The good doctor discovered that the filthy unwashed hands of his colleagues carried and transmitted the infective material to mothers-to-be during routine examinations.*Buda is the hilly side of the city filled with historic treasures and old buildings while Pest (pron. Pesht) is flat and leads off to the agricultural areas. The two are divided by the Danube River. On an island in the river is the 'Thermal Hotel' a remarkable place which also houses a large medical clinic. Like the bawdy side of life? Budapest has plenty of that but use caution. A previous writer has mentioned and it is so true IT AIN'T CHEAP!! When approached by groups of young men on the street asking to provide change for a large bill or any such thing get away from them as quickly as possible. Some Gypsies play great violin while others live by cheating unwary strangers.

Budapest was wonderful! Friendly helpful people! However late at night the cops disconnect the ticket machine for the subway and then want payment as three of them with billy clubs tell you they will call the polizei if you don't pay the fine! The next night we bought extra tickets and gave them to some other unsuspecting American tourists who were being scammed as we descended to the subway. Quite a scam! Buy tickets to subway early!...
