I went with an American company who was sponsored by their government to introduce mechanized farming. Although the common folk had nothing, they were so kind, gentle and caring toward one another and to us. Some lived under lean-to type structures. Most were hungry. The children flocked me calling "Auntie"... I gave away everything I took with me from the States. Bujumbura a city like no other

I went to Bujumbura to visit prisons as a American Christian Chaplain. The hotel was great and the people of the city so warm and friendly to us. The city is definately poor and overcrowded. I had not seen conditions like that in a long time. The food was very good and tasty. I did see a big number of police officers as we went out ot eat one night, I would guess the crime rate is high.
