I went with an American company who was sponsored by their government to introduce mechanized farming. Although the common folk had nothing they were so kind gentle and caring toward one another and to us. Some lived under lean-to type structures. Most were hungry. Although the common folk had nothing they were so kind gentle and caring toward one another and to us. Some lived under lean-to type structures. Most were hungry. The children flocked me calling \Auntie\... I gave away everything I took with me from the States. They are serious about the curfews... they dragged logs across the road and guards with machine guns patroled at night. One person broke the law and they put a car tire around him (holding his arms down by his sides) doused him with gasoline and LIT him on fire! The guy who gave that order was the one we rented our house from! Remember the movie \Year of living dangerously\? With Mel Gibson? It seemed very much like that movie...

2.Bujumbura a city like no other

I went to Bujumbura to visit prisons as a American Christian Chaplain. The hotel was great and the people of the city so warm and friendly to us. The city is definately poor and overcrowded. I had not seen conditions like that in a long time. The food was very good and tasty. I did see a big number of police officers as we went out ot eat one night I would guess the crime rate is high.
