I travelled to Cairo many times in my 2 month stay in Egypt. I was there from November 2008-Jan 2009. Keep an open mind. Approach with the fact that Egypt is one of the oldest civilizations of all time...after all if it wasn't would you still want to go? Don't blame the natives for trying to make a living hopefully bring some salvation back to the U.S by exercising some common principals of mutual respect...in other words when in Rome do as the Romans Do. There are both Old Cairo & New Cairo... More

Don't blame the natives for trying to make a living hopefully bring some salvation back to the U.S by exercising some common principals of mutual respect...in other words when in Rome do as the Romans Do. There are both Old Cairo & New Cairo and to tell you the truth while I did enjoy New Cairo I think I actually felt the character of Old Cairo better!!!! I would also recommend travelling to Benha Egypt its in the agricultural belt and the Oranges are fantastic there!! Still try to remember to exercise common sense with your purse strings as Five Pounds and 56 Piestres are worth ONE American Dollar(last I looked). There now you have some guidance!! Enjoy your trip!!!

I went to Cairo in summer of 2002. I had a wonderful time. Of course the city is a little dirty it is thousands of years old. It is surrounded by sand also. There was no problem at all with my safety. I went alone but had a guide and driver from the hotel at most of the sites. I loved the Cairo Museum. I could have spent more time than I did there! There are three floors and lots of things to see. The vendors do try to bother you but if you speak a little arabic you can get rid of them. Tell them you are going to ask the nearest policeman if their price is fair and they will run away! There are two policemen on every street corner and plenty at the tourist sites. I never once felt afraid. My hotel was wonderful and treated me as if I were family. I only regret that I did not get to travel to Luxor or Alexandria.

The vendors and taxi drivers make visiting cairo too much of a hassle. All they want to do is cheat and steal from you. And there's no enforcement from a police department.

Our experience in Cairo was wonderful. Everywhere we went in the city the people were friendly and helpful. They were especially happy to hear that we were Americans. Of course the street venders are obnoxious at times but that is part of the Middle Eastern experience. If you can't deal with it then go to Europe or stay in the US. We stayed at the Cairo/Zamalek Sheraton which was once a palace and is located on the Nile. The rooms were gorgeous the price was great-$99.00 a night and the staff couldn't do enough for us. We traveled to Aswan by plane and found the people and the culture there to be fascinating. While in Luxor the Egyptologist who was our tour guide nvited us to his home to meet his family and have dinner. He then took us to our train and made sure we were settled and that the conductor would take care of us. He expected nothing in return for his hospitality and would take no extra money even when it was offered. My husband and I are planning another trip to Egypt this summer and can't wait to go. I
