Riviera at it's best
My wife and I went to Cannes as an award for work and really loved it. We stayed at the Carlton right on the Croisette across from the water and its a magnificent hotel. You have to pay to go to the beach and can rent chaises and umbrellas, but its worth it. The view of the bay and the Alps to the left and Esteral mountains to the right make for a fantastic view. I highly recommend a visit to the Esteral as there is good hiking and the scents from all the herbs is fantastic (rosemary, thyme, etc.). Cannes has an old town with some good restaurants and is fun to walk around. On the Croisette (the road that runs along the water) the buildings are more modern. Antibes is nearby and a good place to visit for a day trip (there is a Picasso museum there in his old studio). I've never been in Cannes during the film festival but hear its quite an experience. But I'd suggest visiting during a quieter and less expensive time to really enjoy the charm and beauty of the town. You'll also save yourself money as prices go through the roof during the festival.
