September may be the best time to visit Cape Cod (for those of you who do not have school aged children).   I rediscovered this beautiful part of Massachusetts this year.  The beaches are sandy and gorgeous as well as relaxing sunsets.   Some seals joined us on the beach and were swimming close to shore - a joy to watch.   Small quaint towns with shops and more shops, along with art galleries, specifically, in Welfleet which is towards the end of the Cape.  Then, there are the restaurants and fresh seafood.   Rentals are more reasonable at this time of the year too.   If you want a quiet, relaxing place to visit during off season - it's the Cape !
