4.TABLE MOUNTAIN

I lived in Capetown with my son of 3 years old for over 4 months and he turned 4 years old there. It was then and so far within my travels has been the 1st in natural wonders that are breathtaking and the 2nd in overall good times next to Rome Italy where I was in 2006. The people are fantastic and I have made some lifelong friends there. The children of my friends from Capetown come to the USA and stay with me here in NYC when they travel across the U.S. I lived on the side of Table Mount... More
I lived in Capetown with my son of 3 years old for over 4 months and he turned 4 years old there. It was then and so far within my travels has been the 1st in natural wonders that are breathtaking and the 2nd in overall good times next to Rome Italy where I was in 2006. The people are fantastic and I have made some lifelong friends there. The children of my friends from Capetown come to the USA and stay with me here in NYC when they travel across the U.S. I lived on the side of Table Mountain and the view when you are travelling up the mountain from the city at night is thoroughly \breathtaking\. A gigantic light shines on the mountain at nght and with the fog coming over the top of the mountain...it looks like a table with a lace tablecloth hanging over the side. You must see \Lion Head Mountain\ too and drive from cape to cape within the area. They also have a huge zoo there with all types of animals from North American Brown Bears to African Wild dogs. The prices are ridiculously low with the exchange rate...so if you are thinking about vacationing somewhere with blueish green clean water and white white sandy beaches....that has no trash on the streets or in the water at all...this is the place.

5.Cape Town-Beautiful but be careful!

I spent 2 months in Cape Town a year ago. It was during their Summer andthe beach was my daily habit. The water is very cold but you can't beat theviews and a trip to Boulders Beach was so amazing thanks to the thousandsof Jackass Penguins that use the area as their nesting grounds. Veryfriendly little guys (and gals). I fell in love with them. I must add thatone must have great respect for places such as Boulders Beach.Never feed the penguins or walk out onto their nesting areas!!!Shopping at t... More

There are many localstores as well as the usual favorites. There are craft markets inmany of the urban areas just ask a local and they will direct you.Don't be afraid to barter that's what they're there for.*I must advise people. Do not walk around Cape Town after dark. Crime isrampant there. Always take taxis and know where you're going!Keep all purses and bags small and close to the body. No fancy handbagsThey're just targets for the poor! Keep your cash credit cards andpassport in a pants pocket somewhere hidden. NEVER leave themin your room in your hotel either. Sadly many hotel staff have stickyfingers. Most hotels will tell you the same. They're not bad peoplejust very poor and a rich traveler can afford to part with a few bucks(in their mind). I made peace with the ladies who cleaned my room eachday. I'd leave them a small tip in Rand (local currency) and somefruit or drinks and let them know that it was for them.For this none of my belongings were touched. They did a finejob and my room was always spotless. Mutual respect.Another thing I must warn about is the use of ATM machines.DO NOT BECOME DISTRACTED while using an ATM even inthe busiest location. The local thievesare quicker than David Copperfield at snagging your ATM card while anotheraccomplice has your attention. This happened to me and I thoughtmyself to be pretty savvy.Cape Town is wonderful but be smart.
