Why is this article about Margarita but then asks about Caracas? The two are worlds apart. Caracas is mostly a dump, with 3 million of the 7 million living in shanty towns. The poverty makes it extremely dangerous, especially for tourists who don't know much about the area. On the other hand Margarita is quiet, peaceful and beautiful, with scenery ranging from desert to lush mountain, and great beaches. Most things are very very cheap, especially with foreign currency. Porlamar has a lovely mall with 270 businesses including Hard Rock cafe, local restaurants, designer label stores and American fast food. Porlamar also has the Hilton on the beach, including a casino, and many great restaurants and night clubs (Senor Frog) etc. Most of the tourists are European so there is topless sunbathing (you've been warned). Overall this is the most inexpensive island in the Caribbean, and one of the least dangerous.
