Gallery, museum and auditorium, this is one of the principal cultural centers of Cusco. It was originally constructed in the 16th century over the Amaru Cancha ("House of the Serpent", the animal which symbolizes knowledge.) It was rebuilt after the 1650 earthquake and again at the beginning of the 20th century when it served as as a college. Today it houses the photographic studio of celebrated photographer Martín Chambi and a permanent exhibition of his works (from 1920 to 1950.) In addition, there are exhibitions of other high profile Peruvian artists and a valuable numismatic collection, including the first series of coins to be minted in Peru. Admission is free.
