Castlebar was all the stories of my childhood come to life. My parents both came from there. I sat in front of my late grandmother's fireplace - now my aunt's - and knew that I had come home.The history is there but be ready for a hike to experience it all. Don't miss Ballintubber Abbey just off the Ballinrobe Road. Great restoration and exhibits.... More

4.Mayo rules

County Mayo is still quite a bit of what old Ireland was like. It has few tourists and many spectacular landscapes the largest concentration of prehistoric sites in Ireland. Galway is lovely as is Westport but Sligo and Achill are magnificent as well. Medieval abbeys galore. Quite interestingly mutlicultural mix in parts. Very good food. Lots of fresh fish. There is a lot of space here which is lacking in many parts of Europe. What more can you say? The weather could use some improving but not ... More
