MARAGOGI, BRAZIL

During the last forty years I have vacationed and now am retired on the beaches near Maragogi. The municipality is the gateway to a cluster of closely knit beach communities along the northern coast of the state of Alagoas Brazil called the Coral Coast or the “Costa dos Corais”. It is equidistant to two major international airports – Recife in Pernambuco and Maceio Alagaos. Maragogi's twenty-two kilometers of beaches are on a broad calm lagoon protected by a full living reef a few kilometers from the coconut grove ringed beaches. The continuous expanse of reefs and tropical pools form part of Brazil’s largest federally protected marine eco-system. They are perfect for scuba diving or snorkeling either at the reef or just beyond. Many visitors prefer to wander along the reef (using appropriate footwear) and its pristine beaches looking for sea life or shells admiring the coral formations or to just relax marveling at the constantly changing color of the warm Caribbean-like clear waters. This is the second most visiting destination in the northeastern state of Alagoas right after the State’s capital. It has also been designated by Brazil’s Federal Government as one of the 65 principle tourist destinations of the country. It has a ample and varied infra-structure of all inclusive resorts comfortable hotels bungalows and a collection of boutique inns as well as excellent tours throughout the region that include the famous tropical pools as well as seeing the manatees as well as well preserved forests and refreshing falls. But most of all its almost deserted beaches and inviting safe waters are its principle attraction.
