Quito

Quito is located on a horizontal strip of land running north to south between beautiful mountains. The splendor of the city's natural setting, combined with its attractive squares, parks and monuments as well as the warmth of its people, makes it a unique and unforgettable place. Founded in 1534 with a mere 204 inhabitants, Quito is now the bustling capital of Ecuador, with nearly two million people. For 360 years, its boundaries were marked by the Cerro del Panecillo in the south, Plaza de San Blas in the north, Volcán Pichincha in the west, and Plaza de la Marín in the east. In 1978, Quito was declared a World Heritage site due to its extraordinary historic center. Quito offers marvelous views anywhere you stand. The majestic snow-capped mountains that surround it—Pichincha, Cotopaxi, Ilinza and others—stand proud like stony guardians of time. We traveled from Otavalo north of Quito to Loja in southern Ecuador. We spent alot of time in Quito. The cathedrals mountains culture the food and the value of our dollar was more than we expected. The view of Quito from the virgin statue was amazing. Ecuador is an unique country. Staying in hostels is great way to save money. Getting recommendations from someone is a must. The view of Quito from the virgin statue was amazing. Ecuador is an unique country. Staying in hostels is great way to save money. Getting recommendations from someone is a must. We had our son and daughter-in-law there as Peace Corp volunteers so we had an advantage our own tour guides. We spent three weeks in Ecuador and would of liked to spend more time there. The outdoor markets and the bargining for goods is lots of fun with great buys to be found.

Ecuador and The Galapagos IslandsThis is a great place to visit; I only wish we had been able to visit more cities than Quito on the mainland. NOTE: The US Dollar is the official currency of Ecuador! The Galapagos Islands especially aboard one of the smaller boats (we were on a boat which accommodated only 20 people) is a fantastic place to view exotic animales birds reptiles and landscapes!...
