If you are looking for legendary Greek hospitality go to Chania and the nearby villages. The Venetian Harbor is beautiful and surrounded by outside restaurants and cafes. Unfortunately I did not find any restaurants that were exceptional. They were just OK and I think the better ones are located in town (no view). Try the Kalsounakia (cheese filled fried pastries) washed down with iced Raki (Tsipoudya) or Cretan wine. The fruits and vegetables are freshly picked and fantastic. I think the bottled Cretan wines are superior to the house brownish red wines (strong) served in metal pitchers in most restaurants. Absolutely do not miss going to Omalos - At 1080 metres in altitude the plateau of Omalos is one of the three highest large plateaus of Crete. The view is breathtaking and level with the snow capped mountains and clouds. The ride up on narrow roads can be a little scary. The surrounding villages are each unique with beautiful beaches. Platania has a large Scandinavian tourist population and is a good place to hear Cretan music which may be a little strange to the unaccustomed ear.
