I accompanied by husband on a business trip to Thailand and we decided to take a side trip to Chiang Mai, a one hour flight north of Bangkok. We stayed at Baan Orapin B&B, just across the road from the Ping River (www.baanorapin.com). It was a short walk to the footbridge crossing the river and into the heart of old Chiang Mai. The night market was the best! Small carts line the sidewalk every evening, showing their wares. They are chock full of Thai arts and crafts at incredible bargain prices! In the center of the food court area was a stage where we saw a Muay Thai exhibition fight, Thai dancers and children singers. We hired a taxi for one day and went to Doi Suthep and Wat Phra temple. I am at a loss for words to explain just how inexpensive Chiang Mai was. It amazing to be able to afford all the city had to offer. Dinner for 2 was about $20US, lodging was about $60, taxi from the airport was about $8. The Thai people have such an extraordinary sense of beauty - everything was incredibly clean, neat, and stylish. I would recommend Thailand and especially Chiang Mai for absolutely everyone!
