Christiansted, the island's main town, is a charming place to spend a half day strolling the streets and arcades. The town dates to 1735 when it was called Basin. Between 1755 and 1871, the island's agricultural heyday, the town flourished as the seat of shipping and government. What were once warehouses and businesses with homes on the upper floors are now shops, restaurants, and offices. The buildings in National Park Service's waterfront Christiansted National Historic Site reflect that bygone era. There is a USD3 admission charge at the Historic Site, but credit cards are not accepted.
