I was at Fanning in 1980. We sailed from Hawaii on a 45' Morgan Ketch. The lagoon was abundant with life, mantas, groupers bigger than I. We dinied on lobster twice a day brought by the local childred for the use of our flashlights. Millions of coconut crabs scurry the landscape, while the men pick copra. We stayed a month enjoying the hospitality provided by the locals. It was fun to attent the karated movies the were spoken in Chinese with English subtitles. I will never forget my time there. ... As my 11 year old granddaughter stated when arriving by plane on Christmas Island, Kiribati “Now this is what I call an island”. If you want to go back in time this is the place to go. Air Pacific flies to the island weekly via Hawaii or Fiji, there are several “no frills” small lodges where you can stay which includes meals plus there are two restaurants on the island. The people there were very friendly and the shallow lagoon was unbelieveable. Great place for kids to swim. I would take this cruise again just to go there. It made such an impression on me. It's very simple and beautiful in the natural sense. We were on Fanning Island. It's a part of the Re ... Read Full Review | Report This

We went there for an afternoon as part of our cruise on Norwegian cruise line. It was one of the highlights of the cruise, about 1.5 days from Hawaii. It was said to be the Gilligan's island shown at the opening of the TV show. We rented bikes and explored along the main pathway past grass huts, an open air school and musical natives. We swam in the clear water. In July, the weather was just over 80 degrees, with a nice breeze and picturesque beaches. What a relaxing get-away for an after ... Read Full Review | Report This

The Real Desert Island

We stopped there in 95 when I was delivering a new dive vessel to Fiji from Hawaii. It's a very low-lying, coral island with a massive lagoon and more coconut palms than anywhere else I have ever seen. It was the sight of an atomic test blast in the 50's, but there is no visible evidence remaining. Hundreds of pieces of World War II American equipment abandoned all over the island. We were there to pick up fuel, but enjoyed our 3 day stay (nothing happens very quickly on Christmas Island). ... Read Full Review | Report This
