I was at Fanning Island or Republic of Kiribati in 2003. The island was so remote and beautiful. It is a magical place the fresh sea smell the ocean sounds and friendly natives. Getting back to civilization learned that the Iraq War had started. Wish we could go back!

I was at Fanning in 1980. We sailed from Hawaii on a 45' Morgan Ketch. The lagoon was abundant with life mantas groupers bigger than I. We dinied on lobster twice a day brought by the local childred for the use of our flashlights. Millions of coconut crabs scurry the landscape while the men pick copra. We stayed a month enjoying the hospitality provided by the locals. It was fun to attent the karated movies the were spoken in Chinese with English subtitles. I will never forget my time there.... This was a stop on our Hawaiian cruise with Norweigian. It was such a unique experience. If you want touristy hot spots forget it. If you want unique beauty in it's natural form you'll love this. The people there were very friendly and the shallow lagoon was unbelieveable. Great place for kids to swim. I would take this cruise again just to go there. It made such an impression on me. We went there for an afternoon as part of our cruise on Norwegian cruise line. It was one of the highlights of the cruise about 1.5 days from Hawaii. It was said to be the Gilligan's island shown at the opening of the TV show. We rented bikes and explored along the main pathway past grass huts an open air school and musical natives. We swam in the clear water. In July the weather was just over 80 degrees with a nice breeze and picturesque beaches. What a relaxing get-away for an afternoon... More

The Cruise line stories about the few hundred remote natives were very interesting such as their first exposures to ice ice cream running water bathrooms and movies.

As my 11 year old granddaughter stated when arriving by plane on Christmas Island Kiribati “Now this is what I call an island”. If you want to go back in time this is the place to go. As my 11 year old granddaughter stated when arriving by plane on Christmas Island Kiribati “Now this is what I call an island”. If you want to go back in time this is the place to go. Air Pacific flies to the island weekly via Hawaii or Fiji there are several “no frills” small lodges where you can stay which includes meals plus there are two restaurants on the island. This all natural island has diving surfing and bird watching; however it is an angling destination for bonefish; in fact Christmas Island is largely responsible for the international explosion of interest in fly fishing for bonefish. It also has quaint villages to visit by car which will take you back in time. The people are why we continue to go back. They are the most caring fun-loving people we have ever meant in our worldly travels. They have not lost their “inner child” and hope they never do. My husband and I have been their seven times for pleasure as well as humanitarian efforts. In the past two years our local Rotary club has provided over half of million dollars worth of medical equipment and supplies water supplies and equipment and now working to provide their schools with materials and books.
