1.Cortona a Molto Bene!

We were fortunate to be lodging in a 14th century three story accommodation with a panoramic view over tiled roofs the Valdichiana and Lake Tressimeno. Cortona was everything we had expected and more.
Cortona is charming friendly and rustic. Being a true Tuscan hill town it is also vertical. There is one "flat" street the Via Nationale pretty much everything else is up or down! Some streets and alleys are equiped with stairs others not. All are a delightful cultural adventure... More

Cortona is charming friendly and rustic. Being a true Tuscan hill town it is also vertical. There is one "flat" street the Via Nationale pretty much everything else is up or down! Some streets and alleys are equiped with stairs others not. All are a delightful cultural adventure.
One caution I would give is don't visit Cortona in August. The heat can be punishing especially if you are unaccustomed to hills and stairs.
If you are driving parking can be moderately difficult as Cortona is not really "made for cars". There are parking lots (three that I am aware of) just outside the city proper (of course down hill) within walking distance of the Via Nationale.
Cortona makes a delightful "home base" to see other cities and towns by either car or train. There is excellent bus service to and from Cortona and her surrounding towns. The train station is one short bus trip away. A train ride to Florence is approximately 1 hour while Rome would be approximately 2 hours.
I can recommend a visit to Cortona without reservation and personally look forward with great anticipation to our next visit.
