The sound of a healthy society driven by the automotive industry attracted Royalty from around the world. The General Motors building was close enough to walk to Saks Fifth Avenue. The streets bustled with people from all walks of life. A bus ticket was ten cents.
JL Hudson store was a landmark on Woodward Avenue along with Sander's bakery and SS Kresges.
Even the apartment buildings of the day had marble floors guilded woodwork around the doorways and attendants were always present to operate the elevators. The hotels downtown were 'home' to world famous movie stars.
Motown kicked it up another six notches making Detroit the 'place to be'. It wasn't just a place--it was an attitude. A feeling of pride for those who lived there.
Drugs were always readily available--to the rich and famous as well as to the common person. But the war on drugs began a new form of income as the auto industry moved out restaurants and stores closed and Motown moved to California.
The city was gutted without any replacement for the lost industry. Bankers attorneys and stock brokers still come to their offices from the burbs. But it is unsafe to live in the city of sound.
Withdrawal of industry coupled with the influx of drugs has made this magnificent city into a ghost town. People are suffering.
Detroit is home to a world class art museum a tremendous science museum unbelievably grand mansions iconic churches sports teams Wayne State University U of Detroit Mercy college. Anything a person could want in culture is in Detroit.
Someone needs to bring in fresh government who cares for the people. And industry is needed for jobs.

Detroit has come a long way. I live in detroit for 20yrs. I have to admit that I wasn't a fan because of all the poor media hype. Downtown has beautiful landscapes sidewalk cafes and beautiful night life. The three casino's are spectacular! When walking inside of them it seems to feel like another place. I wish I could descibe them. Don't believe what you see and hear in the media you have to judge for youself. I'm aware of the unemployment problems but remember every city has its bad parts and... I'm aware of the unemployment problems but remember every city has its bad parts and Detroit is no different. It's nice to hear good things about our up and coming city. Thanks to the mayor and his vision and his love for his city Detroit is making a come back!
