The moveable swing bridge for pedestrians, railway and ships was built in 1892, and it is now an operational monument between Holsten and Hanse harbours. The old machine centre inside the brick building with the pumping device for the hydraulics is fully operational and still in service. The through passage of the bridge is 9.5 metres wide, and if there is a need for it to be opened, this must be reported at the ship registration office a day in advance. As Holstenhafen is only used by sports and museum ships these days, and there aren't many passages any more. This is a true relief for the motorists since the thoroughfare would be brought to a standstill because of the busy traffic during the morning hours (there is no charge for opening the bridge from 8:30a-9:30a).
