I visited Dubrovnik in 1990, before the war, when it was still in Yugoslavia. It really was the high point of my five and a half week back-packing trip across Europe, so much so that I actually returned later in the same trip, to enjoy it some more. It was heart-breaking to see the beautiful old buildings having chunks blown off of them from the shelling, and the old streets strewn with rubble. I'm sure it has been cleaned up. I would give almost anything to return to Dubrovnik once more! It is beautiful and the people are more friendly than is almost any other country.
