We left Cape Town, a town with mountains if you looked one way and an ocean if you looked another way, breathtaking either direction. We drove to Durban on the way to a safari game area north. Coming into town from our bus window we saw the poverty, the filth and the poorness in the markets and in the center of the town. Certainly there must be weathly areas but our impression was not good. We stayed in a hotel by the ocean and enjoyed some local bazaars which were set up for tourists, but overall, we didn't feel that we were missing much by pushing on north to other areas, other than Durban. In Cape Town there are blankets of poor by the highway and you see it for miles, but the town itself is cleaner than Durban and you feel safer. There must be richer and nicer areas of Durban somewhere, because we read that in a travel magazine on the airplane, but we didn't see them on our tour.
