Ran out of characters at last review. As I was saying imagine our dismay wwhen we went to see The Shining and discovered it was not filmed at the Stanley after all but at a hotel in another state. The only reason I know the Overlook was indeed the Stanley is because I met Stephen King at a book signing on August 24th 1979 in Braintree Mass. and told him I had occasion to be in Estes Park Colorado. He asked me what I had been doing there and I answered I had been in search of the Overlook. He... More

He asked me what I had been doing there and I answered I had been in search of the Overlook. He then said \And what did you find?\ I replied \the Stanley\ He grinned and said\That's the one that's the one!\ Incidentally the dates on my visit are wrong because the Aol survey did not allow me to go back to the actual year. No one will ever convince me that the Overlook/Stanley is not haunted.

Many years ago we stayed there for a wedding reception - (the Shinning had just come out too that year) - was the worst night of my life! - Lovely hotel by the way - but I felt like there were spirits watching me all night - really freeky - the elevator went up and down with no one in it. - anyway - I'll never go back........ spend 2 weeks each summer in Estes for 12 years. Never stayed at The Stanley but been there for the ghost tour which is wonderful. Excellent restaurants unfortunately they change year to year-most don't survive the winter. Shopping getting on the tacky side with lots of souvenir t-shirt shops. The cool weather in the morning and night are delightful and you are able to switch to shorts during the day. The views of the mountains are awesome from anywhere in town and driving through the park is wonderful. I made snow angels at 12000 feet in late June. The drive to Grand Lake will take you to heights of over 13000 feet to come down to a beautiful sleepy lake town.

my daughter and i stayed at the stanley before it had been renovated. we had a lovely time and were playing scrabble in the lobby. that night we were trying to go to sleep and kept hearing children running around in the hallway as if they were playing tag or hide and seek. laughing and running around. we checked outside but there was no one around but figured they were playing hide and seek. my precocious daughter of 10 went up to the front desk the next morning and told the lady that she did no...
