I live in Estes and can see the Stanley from my cabin. I stay there every now and then. It's a nice little getawayeven though it's across the street. I have breakfast in bed after running home to let the cat out! There are lots of stories about hauntings. There is supposed to be a little boy that is up in the tower. Most everytime I drive by I look into the tower. The Ghost Hunters shows that were filmed there were fun but I think they were hoaxed. There are lots of tunnels under the hotel and t... More

Most everytime I drive by I look into the tower. The Ghost Hunters shows that were filmed there were fun but I think they were hoaxed. There are lots of tunnels under the hotel and they could have fooled the crews easily. I tried to let GH know about these but never got through. Great old hotel. Take the tour if you come to Estes and have a cup of tea on the big front porch!

My husband and I stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park in the famous Room 217. The staff had fun playing pranks on us and we had a great time. This is still my favorite vacation spot ever. Great atmosphere good food beautiful scenery. TV version of The Shining filmed here and was the hotel interior and exterior for most of it. Very exciting.... More

The Stanley Hotel is the first hotel I worked in 1969 been in the hotel business 35 years.
It wasn't haunted then lived in the Manor House which is the smaller building on the right of the Stanley. Have been back numerous times since and can't hardly go to Colorado without going to Estes and getting some salt water taffy. Had one of my first "summer romances" there and have never fortgot her and still wonder what ever happened to her.... More

Having grown up in Estes Park I was always told that the Stanley was haunted. I have never had a chance to witness it for myself. Even though the movie version of the Shining wasn't filmed there parts of the TV version was filmed there. When I first read the book I was impressed how Steven King described the hotel. If you have ever had a chance to go there you will know that it is just like it was in the book. If you looked out of my bedroom window when I was growing up you could see the Stanley... More

I never miss a chance to take pictures of the hotel when I go home.

As a total Stephen King freak shortly after having read The Shining I did some research and discovered that the \Overlook\ Hotel was actually the Stanley Hotel or so I surmised. As a total Stephen King freak shortly after having read The Shining I did some research and discovered that the \Overlook\ Hotel was actually the Stanley Hotel or so I surmised. Since I was able at the time to travel for free and at whim I set off for Estes Park in search of the Overlook. Boy did I find it! When my then boyfriend and now my husband arrived at the Stanley shortly before midnight after a long treacherous ride through mountain roads in thick fog there was no one at the front desk only a pair of shoes on the carpet and a sign on the activities list welcoming the imminent arrival of a psychic group. When we finally roused the desk clerk he assigned us to room 222. The rug leading down the corridor was the same as King described it multi-colored and oddly patterned. And the old-fashioned elevator was also the same with the fabric snakelike fire hoses attached to all the extinguishers. Excited to have found Stephen's \fictional\ hotel we entered our room and prepared for bed. When I turned the water on in the bathroom the water flowing from the tap ran red. (Rust?) The next morning when I came out of the shower my nightgown which was lying atop the commode was fluttering in the breeze although there was no breeze the window was closed and the a/c was off. My boyfriend and I ate that night in the hotel's restaurant which was detached from the main part of the hotel. Although the food was excellent we were the only patrons that night. Much later that evening as we were sleeping my boyfriend woke me up by slamming his fist into the wall beside the bed. He swore he was defending us from an evil looking apparition standing by the bed. We dressed and checked out. As we were leaving a female desk clerk took a phone call that we overheard. She ws talking with Universal Studios confirming that all of the rooms on the fourth floor had beened blocked for a movie filming. Imagine our dismay when THE SHINING came out and was
