Cours Mirabeau is Aix's main thoroughfare. The left side of the Cours leads to the Palais de Justice (judicial center), which carries into the Town Hall area and Aix's old town before coming to the city's Sextius district. On the right side of Cours Mirabeau, Mazarin is the first area you come to and thereafter the area of Carnot, which is sandwiched between Sextius to the north and the university district to the south. The immediate outskirts of the city are divided up geographically and are described here as northern, southern, western and eastern Aix .

A walk along Cours Mirabeau (laid out in 1651), with its many fountains and abundance of greenery, is an essential part of a visit to Aix. In the depths of winter, hot water flows from the Moussue fountain in the middle of the Cours, enveloping the immediate surroundings in a shroud of mist. At the far end of the Cours, Place de la Rotonde is home to the fountain of the same name, an imposing cast-iron basin topped by cherubs from whose lips water continuously trickles. I was lucky enough to study abroad in Aix for a spring semester. I learned everything there was to know about this enchanting little city. The nightlife was great. I loved the irish pubs and a club called Scat right it old Aix. There was nothing better than having a glass of wine at a cafe to just sit and watch for hours. There was a beautiful park with an old hotel where I had lunch at least once a week. I can't begin to explain how much I miss it. If you ever want any tips I would love ... More

St. Victoire is just a short drive from town and a great hike if you're up for it. Arles and Avignon are not far either. I highly suggest exploring Provence as much as possible.

My wife and I went to Aix during a week long stay in Provence and we both really like Aix. The best raspberry tart I've ever tasted was bought in a patisserie there. There's also great cafes restaurants and galleries (Van Gogh painted a good deal here some while he was in an asylum in nearby St. Remy. Cezanne also captured the beauty of Provence in many of his paintings. A good book to read if you're considering the area is 'A Year in Provence' by Peter Mayle. It's a great vacation read as ... It's a great vacation read as its light (many funny scenes) and informative as to the fantastic food of the region. We stayed in a French farmhouse called a 'gite' (pronounced zheet) which is a great economical way to visit France. They are rated (and subsidized) by the government and allow you to experience France like the locals. I highly recommend them as its a wonderful system and help preserve the heritage of the farmers in France.
